Pilgrimage To Nagadeepa
The road from Jaffna city runs through a long causeway to the Kayts Island and from there by another causeway to the Pungudutivu Island. The total distance from Jaffna city to the Pungudutivu Island is 30 KM and there is a regular public and private bus service. The landscape is flat and sandy dotted with numerous Palmyra trees and is completely different from other places in Sri Lanka.
At the far end of Pungudutivu is the Jetty Kurikadduvan (KKD) from where the pilgrims have to take a ferry to Nagadeepa which takes about 15 Minutes. The Bus service and the ferry service are interconnected. The SL Navy oversees the boat service as the public and private boats are operating. There are two main Jetties to enter the Nagadeepa namely the Temple Jetty and the Kovil Jetty.
Rajayathana Stupa
According to the Buddhist history this stupa was constructed enshrining the gem studded throne which was subjected to the dispute among the two Naga kings and late offered to the Lord Buddha by kings after settling the dispute. The Rajayathana Stupa is painted in Silver color, it was due to the Stupa's limestone structure and the close proximity to the sea, which makes it constantly subject to the salty breeze and thus the silver paint protects the structure.
Lord Bodhi Tree of Nagadeepa
A Bodhi sapling from the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi who resides in the Mahamevna Uyana in Anuradhapura has been planted near the sea in front of the Nagadeepa Temple.
Palace of Relics (Dhathu Mandiraya)
The Most Venerable Randombe Siri Somasiri Thero, the original author of the Nagadeepa Navodaya, has placed the sacred relics of the ancient Nagadeepa Rajamaha Viharaya, which had been lost to Buddhists since 1931.
The Standing Statue of Lord Buddha
The standing statue of the Nagadeepa temple can be called as the newly built temple item. It reminds that 2360 years have passed since the ascension of the Lord Buddha to Nagadeepa, on Bak full moon day of the 26th day of the month of 2021
Prarthana White Bodhi Tree
At the request of the present Chief Incumbent of the Nagadeepa Viharaya, retired Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Ravindra Wijegunaratne planted the Prarthana White Bo-tree with the donation of the Venerable Balabowe Wimalakitti Tissa Thero.
Kiripalu Nuga Tree
At the time of the war between the kings of Chulodara and Mahodara, a deity named Samiddhi Sumana, who was residing at Kiripalu Nugaruka near the south gate of Devram Vehera, took Kiripalu Nugaruka as an umbrella and came to Sri Lanka providing shade for the Buddha. The enlightened Na kings placed the Kiripalu Nugaruka near the Rajayathana Chaitya and worshiped it as an object consumed by the Buddha. The great Kiripalu Nugaruksha that originated from that Kiripalu Nugaruka is still planted near the Nagadeepa Lord Bodhi Tree. Devotees' statements confirm that many people have worshiped the kiripalu NUgaruka and prayed and obtained results.
Nagadeepa Temple Museum
The Nagadeepa Museum has been built by placing Ancient relics and also the relics of the Most Venerable Royal Pandit Brahmanawatte Dhammakiththi Tissa Maha Nayaka Thera who preserved the Nagadeepa Temple with the sacrifice of life.
Sathara Maha Devalaya of Nagadeepa Temple
Nagadeepa Ancient Rajamaha Viharaya has been revered by pilgrims and other nations since ancient times. The Satara Maha Devalaya of the Nagadeepa Temple is one of the most revered places for Hindu devotees when they visit the Nagadeepa Temple. The dilapidated temple, which had not been renovated for many years, was beautifully restored.
